Display Wizard have recently conducted a comprehensive survey into small high-street retail businesses to shed light on the sector’s performance in 2019.

The survey asked a range of business owners to give their opinion on a range of topics including the ups and downs of running a small retail business on the high street; the most effective marketing methods; and their thoughts on the potential effects of Brexit.

The results were collated into a comprehensive report as well as an easily-shareable infographic.

At-a-glance statistics:

  • 56% of small retail business owners complain that expensive high-street rents are the biggest threat to their business.
  • 62% of participants selected printed advertising as their most profitable means of advertising.
  • 66% of respondents thinking Brexit will have a positive effect on their business.

Small high-street businesses in the UK have had a rocky few years of late, with expensive rental costs, increased competition online and economic uncertainty all leading to difficult trading conditions.

These well-publicised issues on the high street were one of the reasons why Display Wizard conducted the survey. The primary respondents were independent shop owners as well as café, restaurant and pub owners, all of which had between 1 – 25 employees.

Peter Symonds, Managing Director of Display Wizard said of the survey:

“At Display Wizard we like to conduct our own research into different sectors that we work with, and along the way we often reveal some surprising statistics. This survey was no different as we uncovered some results that were too good to keep to ourselves!”
