What’s the Effect of Music in Your Productivity ?

One cure to boredom is listening to your favorite music. With the beat and pump of instruments, soulful vocals, and appealing lyrics – a part of you is already transported to other dimension.  Do you wish you can experience music at work ? Will it affect your focus and productivity?

While many offices are still attuned to silent mode of environment, there are companies that give leeway to their employees to wear headset while working at their cubicle. This is especially true for those in the line of creative, entertainment and advertising.

In the report of Sydney Morning Herald, they shared the study of University of Sheffield researchers in 2011 that affirmed music boosts  moods and help workers to psychologically forget  if what they’re doing are the things they actually don’t like.  However there are also instances they’re the ones who opt to make their work places music less due to imaging.  For them, listening  to music may send signals that they’re unprofessional for their clients, and  they do care not to distract their coworkers.  The research also found that employees also try to avoid conflict when it comes to taste of music and they also think that music may affect their concentration.

But University of Miami’s music therapy program assistant professor Teresa Lesiuk shared, via New York Times,  her discovery that workers easily conceptualize ideas and finish their tasks because they listen to music. She also found out through their study  that music affect one’s work performance.

“When you’re stressed, you might make a decision more hastily; you have a very narrow focus of attention,” Lesiuk explained. “When you’re in a positive mood, you’re able to take in more options.”

Also in New York Times’ report, the Mayo Clinic’s physician of integrative medicine Dr. Amit Sood divulged that invigorating sound help to release of dopamine, neurotransmitter chemicals, which signals brain about happy thought  that can be compared when people experience when they eat their  favorite food.
