The Heritage of Rado – Tempus Philippines

Rado watch - Executive Chronicles

Through the years, it’s proven that making a mark is not a battle of quantity, but the quality of a creation. Rado Watch Company proves this in so many ways in their decades of success in the industry of watchmaking. Their luxury watches even prove how fantastic ideas can be tangible creations that everyone can wear and enjoy.

Product of Changes

Rado Watch Company revolutionary ideas may come from their past and present artistic watchmakers, but perhaps they are also prompted by their colorful history.  It is because before it became the famous brand of luxury watches, the company had gone through changes since its inception in Lengnau, Switzerland around 1917. It was first known as Schlup & Co, founded by siblings Ernst, Fritz, and Werner Schlup.

At first, Schlup & Co supplied watch movements for other companies. But in 1957, they evolved into a distinct watchmaker on their own and called themselves Rado Watches Co. Ltd.  In that same year, they amazed the world with their Golden Horse watches and the year after with their water-proof Green Horse timepieces. These two lineups of watches made waves in more than 60 countries because of their remarkable elegant designs.

In 1960, Rado tapped into creating timepieces that promise durability, apart from captivating design. This led to introduction of the world’s first scratch resistant watch named Diastar 1. Diastar 1 is made of robust metal and featured sapphire crystal. It is also the time when the Swiss watchmaker launched its fantastic Planning Automatic Watch with Day-Date display. Planning Automatic Watch has resin/stainless steel perpetual calendar, stainless steel case, bezel, crown, and bracelet, 25 jewels, automatic movement, vertical day-date display, and more. Besides these products, it was also the time when Captain Cook series was first introduced to the public.

A decade later, Rado updated their signature sturdy watches with the launch of the Dia 67. The Dia 67 is known for its gold plate and metalized sapphire crystal. They also upgraded this lineup in 1980s, but with a high-tech tweak. Their watches, this time, were made of high-tech scratchproof ceramic. It is in this decade, as well, when they unveiled their square-shaped watches called the Anatom. The Anatom’s remarkable features are its gold hands and markers.

Getting high tech, Getting upgraded

Not stopping at producing ergonomic but totally elegant design watches, the Swiss watchmaker started the ceramic trend in the 90’s. Their Rado Ceramica stood out because of its combined bracelet and watch case made of sapphire crystal and high-tech ceramic. This was followed by the Rado Sintra, the timepiece powered by “cermet” or ceramic, metal, and titanium-based materials. Then, Rado ended ‘90s with an updated Ceramica collection, a watch collection that has a punch of high-tech ceramic and metallic glow.

Everyone got high hopes with the start of the millennium. It is also the time when pop women rocked the world. Rado celebrated this when they launched their no-crown and oval case watch Esenza. It was a mega hit for women at that time. Two years later they came out with Rado V10K, a timepiece that is as sturdy as diamond since it is made of high-tech hard diamond rated at 10,000 Vickers. In addition, Jasper Morrison collaborated with them for their R5.5 collection.

By 2011, when the emergence of high-tech light and portable gizmos, Rado had the True Thinline collection. This series of watches is the definite upgrade of Rado’s pride—ceramic watches. This time, it was assembled in an astonishingly thin 5mm case, quite possibly the thinnest ceramic case in history. In the year after, they brought the Hyperchrome collection, which also had upgraded versions in 2014 (HyperChrome Dual Timer) and 2016 (HyperChrome Ultra Light). HyperChrome Ultra Light watches have silicon nitride, ceramic, and titanium that make these incredibly lightweight and comfortable to wear.

Rado is continuously reinventing its signature sturdy, ergonomic, and distinguished designs—which they match to the evolving technology and taste of buyers. This year, they relaunched Captain Cook which has the vintage appeal of the original version and the high-tech mechanisms of today. Indeed, it’s a tradition for Rado to offer luxury watches that are not only eye-catching, but also robust in design. Truly remarkable watches to collect.
