Food is body’s fuel and human can’t live without it, period. Given that fact, many households and offices still don’t care about the food waste they throwaway. While there are causes behind uneaten food and leftovers, there are also important reasons and advantages if you avoid food waste.
According to Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), food losses alone during food productions is already a problem. It means pointless use of water supply, energy, land, and other elements. This is aside from the worthless risks in green gas emissions.
“Hunger is still one of the most urgent development challenges, yet the world is producing more than enough food. Recovering just half of what is lost or wasted could feed the world alone,” FAO’s statement.
Aside from the issues of hunger and garbage, another reason why you should prevent food waste is to save money. Remember that if you purchase something you don’t use and maximize, that’s also considered a money mistake. In terms of food, they’re things that prone to throwaway because of spoilage and expiration. Thus, if you prevent food waste, you also save pesos. Here some ways to do:
Check your kitchen first especially the fridge before going to the market. While writing your “to buy list,’ check around your kitchen. Buying additional supply of condiments or ingredients is not cool, if you tend to use the new or fresh ones. Be good in estimating how many you need or better have planned meals for days. This will let you visualize what you need to buy or not.
Choose going to the market and avail discounts. Most of the time, markets are only walking distance so going there will give you multiple benefits such as exercise and avoid paying fare. If you’re a good and loyal buyer, maybe you can find vendors who can give you discounts or “suki” price. In case that the market in your town is far or it’s inconvenient to go there, choose stores that offer quality products for cheaper prices.
Be a resourceful food champion. Create meals with inexpensive ingredients that already available in your kitchen. If you want to discover delicious and easy to cook meals, just research on Google and watch video tutorials on Youtube. On the other hand, reheating food from your fridge is not bad.
