Stress in itself is not a bad thing. In fact, there is a thing called “Eustress” or a good form of stress. This is what pushes us to go up every morning and face the world. Then there is also a thing called “distress”.

This is the negative form of stress that causes misery and weariness. It can even manifest as a symptom of our body. So when you are experiencing distress, here are some tips to control your stress level:

PAUSE

Pausing is a great habit whenever you feel stress build up. When things seem to go out of control, pause. When an idea doesn’t seem to work out, pause. When you ran out of ideas, pause. When you are close to an argument, pause. When you are tired, pause. Stopping for a while will let you sort things out. It’s a much better way to control stress and prevent you from reaching the point of burnout.

HAVE A BREATHER

Another way to control your stress level is to let off a steam. Let go of your negative emotions. Develop non-hostile ways of letting out your anger, stress, and tiredness. It may be a leisure stroll, a physical workout, painting, dancing, or singing your heart out.

USE AGGRESSIVENESS IN A POSITIVE WAY

Being aggressive can get you in a stressful situation. Your aggressiveness can also cause distress to other people in your workplace. Control your stress level by re-channeling your aggressiveness. Instead of being aggressive in an argument, be aggressive in helping other people. Instead of being aggressive about having it your way, be aggressive in collaborating with others. Be aggressive in beating out distress.

COUNT YOUR BLESSINGS

In the midst of all the hustle and bustle of your daily life, don’t forget to count your blessings. You may be stressed by failures and deadline, but don’t forget all the blessings that are around you. These may be little things but counts in your life. Your family, your health, your skills and abilities, these are vital to your success.

FOCUS ON YOUR STRENGTHS

One of the main sources of our distress is that we always focus on fixing our weakness. Yes, we may improve our weakness especially if we need it to achieve our goal. But if we focus on our weakness, we may never reach our full potential. So instead of being miserable about our weaknesses, we need to focus on our strengths. We need to discover and harness our core gifts. It may be writing, selling, or arts and crafts. No matter what it is, we must use these strengths to control our stress ad achieve our goal.
Stress in a form of distress can harm our body. But eustress, the positive form of stress can also be beneficial for us. So in your daily endeavors, choose eustress rather than distress.
