Procrastination is maybe one of the most common culprits for unmet goals and failed projects. Here are the five simple ways to deal with it:
1. Just do it.
“Never put off until tomorrow what you can do the day after tomorrow,” – Mark Twain
Over thinking about a certain task is a perfect way to procrastinate. There are tasks that would only take 5 minutes do it. If you feel like you really don’t have enough time to write a business letter or organize your office, delegate it. You don’t have to do the entire task alone. If you find other ways to finish the task, just do it too.
2. Focus on the outcome.
You cannot deny it. There is important task that can make you feel boring. And, there are also these not so important tasks that are fun to do. If you are put in a situation like this, always focus on the gain. What will happen if you managed to finish a certain boring task? It can mean more sales for the company or promotion for you. Focus on the outcome and there will never be a dull task anymore.
3. Bites size it.
So, you have a big presentation next week? You feel overwhelmed. You are tempted to just do it the next day because the report looks too complicated. Why not try to break it down into smaller chunks?
Cutting the task into smaller bites declutters your mind and lessens the overwhelming feelings. It helps you to think clearer and start the task at once.
4. Finish one task at a time.
After breaking the task into smaller chunks, finish each task one at a time. When you write your assignments on the board, it is easy to get destructed and jump from task to task. Doing this will suck your energy without finishing anything.
Write your current task on a sticky note or board and focus on it until you finish it. Be kind to yourself. Multi-tasking is not always the key.
5. Relax.
You don’t have to work on a 24/7 mode. Many times, enjoying some relaxation activities will make you more alert and creative. It will also help if you will eat healthy food options. Instead of munching a glazed donut, try to have some apple or banana for snacks. Drink more water instead of gulping coffee and other caffeinated drinks. Exercising regularly will also help you to feel good. Thus, having a relaxation time will help you to be more productive and finish your assignments.
