Having a sedentary work plus the everyday stress that we face is detrimental to our well-being. Here are some tips we can try to feel refreshed and invigorated despite a stressful workplace:
Walk around the workplace.
After an 8-5 job, not everyone can afford to hit the gym, and it is also very challenging to do any exercise at home when you have kids to take care of, and all you want to do is jump right into bed and fall into a deep slumber. A perfect alternative is to walk around your office or building during your lunch break, especially after eating your meals and you are feeling sleepy.
Walking is a perfect stress buster and a way for you to take a breather even for just a few minutes before you resume your job. A study in Curtin University shows that university staff members who take a walk during lunch time felt more relaxed, more enthusiastic which led to higher levels of motivation.
Pay attention to your diet.
Just because you are busy, it doesn’t mean that your diet will also suffer. Keep in mind that what you put on your body, affects what your output will be. So if you keep on feeding your body with fried foods, fatty stuff, empty calories, and soda, you’ll more likely to be stressed and feel bloated.
Opt for vegetables and fruits as your snack. Prepare grilled foods instead of fried. You can also organize a potluck lunch (consisting of nutritious foods of course!)
Eliminate unnecessary activities that waste your time.
Oftentimes we feel stressed and tired after 8 hours of work not because of the deadline or the task at hand but because of the things we do in between. These activities include gossiping, checking emails and social media accounts a dozen times every day, and procrastination.
But come to think of it. We can live freely and happily without these activities. What about the work-related emails? We can schedule a specific time every day to check our social media accounts and not waste our entire day, pretending to be busy but achieving nothing.
Replace the above unnecessary activities with a series of systematically arranged tasks.
The main reason why with mingle with such unnecessary activities is because we are confused which task we should do first. To avoid this, we should take a brief moment to prioritize each task and choose the one we need to achieve immediately.
Transform your work area.
A dirty, disorganized work area can add up to our stress. Every day, before turning proceeding with our work, take a time to clean and arrange our workplace. We can add vibrancy to the workplace by placing flowers or live plants.
We can also put a picture of our loved ones to constantly remind us who we are working for every day. This will keep us motivated and focused on our task.
There is other fun and creative ways of cutting out stress from your work environment such as yoga breaks, “exercise”, taking a 15-minute nap, and many more. Keep in mind that these activities do not hinder us from achieving our goals, in fact, these can greatly the employee’s motivation and productivity.
