Choosing a career is a crucial part of your success in life. At times it is difficult to choose because you are afraid to make mistakes. This can lead to Analysis Paralysis, you cannot decide, you cannot choose.
To avoid this condition, here are some bad career beliefs that you should shake off:
A PERFECT JOB MUST ALLOW YOU TO DO ALL THE THINGS THAT YOU WANT TO DO
One of the bad career beliefs is that you only do what you want and avoid things that you do not want. Well, every job has its perks combined with responsibility. You may love doing travel documentaries. You may love the travel part and hate the reporting and the writing part.
Well, it’s all part of the package. You need to do and get the job done so that you will have spare time to do the things that you love.
WHEN YOU LOVE YOUR JOB, YOU WILL NOT WORK FOR THE REST OF YOUR LIFE
This is also one of the bad career beliefs. Yes, it is true that when you love what you are doing, you don’t feel the hardships. You pour all your heart and mind into it, yet you don’t feel tired. But not all days are enjoyable. Trials and challenges will come. Your patience and perseverance will be tested. You need to accept it so that you can prepare for it.
THE COMFORTABLE JOB IS THE PERFECT JOB
You’re in an air conditioned room. You just sit on your table and pretend to do something on your desktop. You get your salary, pay your bills, and shop a little. And you think you are in paradise. This bad career belief could lead you into a trap called the rat race. Being in a routine may seem comfortable, but not at all times.
Keep in mind that all the things that you need to be successful are just outside your comfort zone.
THE HIGHER THE DEGREE, THE BETTER YOUR LIFE WILL BE
In the past this is true. Strive to have a doctorate degree in something and you will have a secure tenure for the rest of your life. But nowadays this is not true. Nothing is secure now. So if you want to survive, you will have to be a jack of all trades. Learn a little bit of many things. Do not reject knowledge even if it is not in your “area of expertise”.
IF YOU FIND THE “PERFECT JOB” STICK TO IT
What is your idea of a perfect job? Is it the comfort it brings? Is it the tenure, perhaps? Is it the salary? You may think that people who change job are irresponsible. Well, everyone has their personal goal on why they choose such a job. They may be trying things out. Or they may be getting some experience before putting up a business.
Choosing a career is difficult. This is a learning process which has different personal meaning for all of us. You can try and test different careers. Don’t feel bad about yourself if you don’t succeed at once.
Instead, pick up all the things that you have learned. Use this knowledge to achieve your ultimate goal in life.
