Homerun Nievera, Executive Chronicles | The professional world is changing as time goes on and more millennials enter the workforce. Certain norms are going out the window like dressing in business attire for work, which most millennials prefer not to do. You would also be surprised at the number of hobbies that are now accepted that were not accepted in the professional workforce years ago. The following are four hobbies that professionals are now engaging in at work.
Light Workout
There was a time when the only kind of workout that was accepted in the workplace was done at the company’s gym. This is no longer the case. Many employees are noticing that light exercises like yoga or even tai-chi can be done at any time.
Many employees are now taking up some of these workouts and conducting them from their place of work during their breaks or even while they are sitting at their desk. Employers should encourage such activities because they actually help improve productivity. Exercising helps the mind unwind, which can increase clarity and help your employee work better.
Musical Work
There is no doubt that work can be stressful at times, which drives many employees to try one thing or another to relax. There was a time when employees simply took a moment to take a few deep breaths before getting back to work while others used visualization to remove themselves from the workplace for a second. It seems that today’s employees are enhancing their methods to feel better at work, even while working.
This might sound unorthodox, but some employees are starting to use wireless headphones to listen to music therapy tracks that help center the mind, relax them, and even improve their cognitive functions. Of course, employees who do this usually just wear one headphone or earphone rather than two. It might even be a good idea to try to just have some of this music playing for everyone to hear.
Smoking Fun
You have probably seen a person in a business suit smoking outside the office. This person probably throws away the cigarette bud once he or she is done. This hobby is quite popular because it helps you relax, but this hobby is changing at the moment.
A few years ago, a person could not really use e-cigarettes at work, even though they are much cleaner, and the scent is not as strong. Now, many people are switching from traditional cigarettes to e-cigs. Those who want a full flavor smoke use drip tips for e cigs but may need drip shields to keep the experience as clean as possible because employees should not drip e-juice at work.
Cooking Hobby
Employees who love to cook as a hobby might love knowing that their employer will allow them to bring more elaborate types of foods and snacks to work. Some employers are starting to notice that employees want the freedom to be the best employees they can be.
Now, no one is bringing an electric stove top to work, but what people are doing is mixing a few relaxing snacks to help them get through the day. Some employees are cooking up meals or drinks with raw chocolate because it helps relax the mind. Others are making herbal teas that help a person relax, such as chamomile among other options. There are some who come to work with homemade chocolate and honey bars. This is a great way for employees to blend their love for cooking and work.
These are just some of the hobbies that are more accepted by professionals and employers. Of course, there are others, probably some that have not been discovered, so be sure to keep your ear to the ground because you never know what could help employees feel better at work.
